Passport Photo Background Colour: What to Choose for India, US, UK and Schengen
For most passport and visa photos the background must be plain and light, and white is the safest choice. Rules differ by country and by document, so confirm with the application you are filling.
Usual background colours
| Document | Usual background |
|---|---|
| Indian passport | Plain white |
| US passport and visa | Plain white or off white |
| UK passport | Plain cream or light grey |
| Schengen visa | Plain light colour |
| OCI card | Plain light colour, usually white |
These are the common requirements, not a guarantee. Embassies update their rules, so read the current instructions before you order.
What makes a background fail
- Shadows behind the head or shoulders
- Patterns, furniture or other people in the frame
- A background that is too dark or has a strong colour cast
- Uneven light, with one side brighter than the other
Fixing a bad background
If your photo was taken at home against a wall or curtain, you do not need to retake it. Upload it to Snap Print and choose white, red, blue or grey. We replace the background, correct the colour and brightness, and print it. This is included in the price.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a passport photo against a white wall?
Yes, if the light is even and there are no shadows. Stand a little away from the wall so your shadow does not fall on it.
Is a blue background ever required?
Some documents and forms ask for blue or red backgrounds. Read your form. If it does not say, use plain white.
