Stamp Size Photo vs Passport Size Photo: Sizes and When to Use Each

People often ask for a “stamp size photo” when they need a small photo for a form. It is not the same as a passport size photo. A stamp size photo is usually about 20 x 25 mm, while a passport size photo is 35 x 45 mm.

Size comparison

Photo mm cm Pixels at 300 DPI
Stamp size (usual) 20 x 25 2 x 2.5 236 x 295
PAN card 25 x 35 2.5 x 3.5 295 x 413
Passport size (India) 35 x 45 3.5 x 4.5 413 x 531
Square 2 x 2 inch (US, OCI) 51 x 51 5.1 x 5.1 600 x 600

“Stamp size” is a common name, not an official standard, so exact sizes vary a little between forms. Always check the size written on your form.

Where each size is used

  • Stamp size: small spaces on application forms, ID cards and some exam or admission forms.
  • Passport size: passports, many visas, driving licence and general ID applications.
  • Square 2 x 2 inch: US visas and passports, and the OCI card.

Can I use a passport photo instead of a stamp size photo?

Only if the form allows it. A larger photo may not fit the space and some offices will not accept it. If you are unsure, ask the office or check the form instructions.
