What to Wear for a Passport Photo: Do and Dont List
Your outfit will not decide whether a photo is accepted, but a few choices make the shot cleaner and avoid reprints.
Pick a colour that contrasts with the background
With a white or light background, a solid mid or dark top separates you from the wall. A white shirt against a white wall makes your shoulders disappear.
Keep patterns and logos out
Plain tops photograph best. Bold prints, large logos and busy collars pull attention away from the face and can look messy at passport size.
Necklines and collars
A simple round neck or collar keeps the frame tidy. Avoid anything that rises above your chin or covers your neck.
Glasses
Glare is the real risk. If you wear glasses, check there are no reflections over the eyes and that the frames do not cover them. Some applications ask you to remove glasses, so read the rules for your form.
Hair
Keep hair off the face so both eyes and your eyebrows are clearly visible. Tie long hair back if it falls across your face.
Jewellery and accessories
Small earrings are usually fine. Large pieces that cast shadows or reflect light are better left off. Rules about head coverings depend on the document, so check the official guidance.
Makeup and grooming
Natural is best. Avoid shiny products that create glare under light, and do not use filters or heavy retouching afterwards.
The day before
- Iron your top so the collar sits flat
- Choose a plain solid colour
- Plan to shoot near a window in daylight
Outfit ideas by background
- White or very light background: navy, maroon, bottle green, charcoal or a deep blue shirt or kurta.
- Light blue or grey background: a white or cream top can work, as long as it is clearly different from the backdrop.
- Not sure of the background: choose a solid mid-tone colour. It rarely clashes with anything.
Traditional wear
Traditional clothes are fine in most cases. The same advice applies: choose a plain solid colour, avoid heavy embroidery near the neckline and keep the collar tidy. Rules about head coverings and religious dress depend on the document and the country, so read the official guidance for your form instead of guessing.
Common clothing mistakes
- A top that matches the wall, so your shoulders vanish
- Bold stripes or checks that look noisy at small size
- A scarf or hood that covers the chin or hairline
- A strapless or very low neckline that makes the frame look unusual
- A wrinkled collar that sits unevenly
Do a test shot first
Take one test photo in your chosen outfit before the real session. Look at it at small size. If your head and shoulders separate clearly from the background and nothing distracts the eye, you are ready.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear white in a passport photo?
Often yes, but not against a white background, where it blends in. Pick a contrasting solid colour.
Do I need to remove my glasses?
It depends on the document. Check your form. If you keep them on, make sure there is no glare.
